The Mother of God - The Chirsk, or Pskov, Icon of the Mother of God . Originally this Icon was in a church in the village of Chirsk, in the Diocese of Pskov. In 1420, with an epidemic raging in Pskov, tears began to flow from both eyes of the Chirsk Icon of the Mother of God. Learning of this sign, Prince Fyodor Alexandrovitch of Pskov sent clergy to bring the Miraculous Image to Pskov. At the meeting of the Icon, there was a procession of the Cross, attended by a multitude of people, including the prince. Everyone piously offered up prayers. The people of Pskov carried the Icon into the city and placed it in the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity. July 16th was instituted as the Icon’s Feast Day, in commemoration both of the epidemic’s cessation, and of the many miracles which were shown forth through the Icon. After its transfer to Pskov, the Chirsk Icon came to be known as the Pskov Icon.  

Pskov is administrative center of Pskov region in the North-West of Russia. The region covers a territory of 55,300 kilometers and has a population of 827,100. You will admire more than 30 churches, erected in 14 c � 17 c. The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Savior in the Mirozhsky Monastery is a pearl of the Russian architecture. It was built and painted by Byzantine masters in 12 c. Currently it is the most completed ensemble of frescoe painting of the Ancient Russ. The city was a famous fortress and a protector of the Russian lands. It was also a trade, handicraft and architectural center with a vast number of churches.

Snowy Leopard is blazon (arms) of Pskov. Though this wild animals never lived here in our forests (wooden), Pskovites took this animal to their blazon. Probably they consider thyself brave, gallant, clever, cunning, strong, like Snowy Leopard.

In ancient times, in Kremlin was warehouses. Here boyar families kept the grain, clothes, the armor, i. e. very important stores, inside the Krom. But now remained only one ancient building in the Krom. It is Powder Chamber, which you stay near with fortified wall and Trinity Cathedral.

Near with beautiful Trinity Cathedral in the Kremlin was Veche square. Pskov Veche held disputes on all vital problems of life and policy. On January 1510 the Veche bell was removed and executed.

Near with Kremlin in Pskov situated Market Place. At the Market Place there was exhibited a wide range of the works of Pskovian artisans. Foreign commercial relations were of great importance for Pskov.
